Arthur Whiteside has decided to retire from his position as Managing Director UK Sales at Alexander Dennis at the end of this month after an automotive career spanning more than five decades. He will step back from day to day involvement at that date, but has agreed to lend continued support to the business during a transitional phase.

Colin Robertson, Alexander Dennis Chief Executive, says: “Arthur has been an outstanding leader of the UK Sales team and his contribution to shaping the UK bus market and establishing our domestic market leadership cannot be underestimated. He will be greatly missed by colleagues, customers and the wider industry. We wish Arthur a long and very happy retirement.”

Following a modest start on the tools as a truck mechanic, Arthur began his commercial career in the early 1970s selling vans and trucks in central Scotland before joining the Cowie Group as truck sales manager. After general manager roles within the Ford Motor Company dealer network and a large DAF franchised operation, Arthur secured roles of increasing responsibility with Renault Trucks UK, culminating in 1996 in leadership of the entire Renault truck sales operation through the dealer network across the UK and Ireland. During this time, Renault Trucks rose from being a small player to become the fastest growing truck manufacturer in the UK.

Arthur joined Alexander Dennis in 2005 as Aftermarket Director, where he was responsible for establishing new parts warehouse centres in the United States, Canada and New Zealand which remain critical pieces of our aftermarket support network today. Arthur transitioned into the role of UK Sales Director in 2009 and since then has led his team to achieve and sustain leadership of the UK bus market with a market share of over 50%.

While Alexander Dennis finalises a new structure for its UK sales organisation, customers will continue to be looked after by their established contacts Martin Brailey (Sales Director for London & the South), Richard Matthews (Retail Sales Director Bus & Coach) and Keith Watson (UK Customer Development Director with responsibility for major operating groups).
