Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) has won a significant share of a £71.5m order confirmed today by FirstGroup, the leading transport operator in the UK and North America.

The order, placed by FirstGroup’s bus division, will see the introduction of 305 state-of-the-art, low emission vehicles to their UK fleet between now and the end of March 2017.

ADL will build 204 of the vehicles, representing almost 70% of the total order, worth an estimated £50m.

All 204 buses will be ADL’s new-generation, “low carbon certified” Euro6 vehicles, which reduce NOx emissions by 95%. They will be fitted with Wi-Fi, providing free internet access, and many of them will also have USB plug-in points, enabling passengers to charge mobile phones and tablets.

Commenting on this latest business win Colin Robertson, ADL’s Chief Executive said: “We have worked closely with FirstGroup over many years to raise the bar for the industry. Our shared vision is to provide passengers and drivers with world-class products that introduce advanced technology, improve comfort, safety and vehicle performance, and exceed environmental requirements.

“All of the vehicles in this order meet these exacting demands and endorse our policy of continuous, multi-million pound investment in new technology and the vehicles of tomorrow. The 133 double decks and     71 midi buses we will deliver to First Bus in the next 12 months are our latest generation vehicles, designed, engineered and built in the UK.

“Establishing ADL as FirstGroup’s principal bus supplier is a great accolade and a tribute to our product quality and reliability.  This order will play a significant part in underpinning jobs at our manufacturing facilities in Central Scotland, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Surrey, where we employ 2,000 team members. It also spells good news for the 4,000 jobs in our extensive supply network.”

In addition to the 204 buses being built for First Bus in the coming months ADL will body 10 luxury coaches for them at its Plaxton facility in Scarborough. These will be built on Volvo B11R chassis.

ADL is the largest British-owned business in the UK automotive sector and in recent years has been one of the fastest-growing bus and coach manufacturers in the developed world, with turnover in excess of £600m in 2015. It specialises in the manufacture of lightweight, fuel-efficient city buses and coaches.  ADL employs 2,400 team members globally and supports a further 1,500 jobs through its global build partnerships. Market leader in the UK and Hong Kong, ADL has extended its international reach significantly through a series of alliances, JVs and acquisitions that now give it a significant presence in Europe, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, the USA and Canada.  In October 2015, ADL announced a contract to deliver 90 double deck buses to Mexico City from the end of 2016.  These vehicles, to be built in UK, will be the first double deck vehicles to be deployed in an urban transit application anywhere in Latin America.
